The goal of this Clean Michigan Initiative (CMI) Grant Project was to plan, design and implement needed conservation measures at critically eroding sites on or near the Kalamazoo River and its tributaries, delivering substantial nonpoint source pollutants (sediments and nutrients) to these waterbodies. A total of nine project sites were selected as part of this project to receive conservation techniques.

Soil samples were collected from each site and analyzed for phosphorus content. Dimensions of the eroding site were measured to be used with the phosphorus content to determine phosphorus loading to the river from each site. The table below lists the estimated annual sediment and phosphorus loading from each site. It also indicates the average soil phosphorus concentration measured at each site.

Project partners included:

  • City of Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant
  • Kalamazoo River Watershed Council
  • Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Allegan County Road Commissions
  • Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Allegan County Conservation Districts
  • Local USDA-NRCS offices
  • Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Allegan Resource Conservation & Development Councils (RC&D)
  • Kieser & Associates

Streambank stabalization measures were installed at three sites. The banks were shaped and plantings were installed at Site #10 (the Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant) in October 2003. The photos below compare the "before and after" conditions of the streambanks at Site #10.

In September 2003, a live crib wall was installed along 300 linear feet of the Battle Creek River at Site Number #1 in Calhoun County. In 2003, a 705-foot stretch of AB Avenue over Augusta Creek in Kalamazoo County (Site Number #6) was paved and improved with other BMPs to prevent sediment loading into the creek. Curbs were added to divert stormwater through a BMP chain. Additionally, managerial changes were implemented in which no salt or pesticides will be applied in the stretch of road over the creek. Street sweeping and debris removal will occur biannually or more frequently. Click the site numbers in the table below (for Sites #1, #6 and 10) for project descriptions (in PDF format).
