Natural Features of the P/A Watershed

--Bird Data:

Wild turkeys have been observed near Portage Creek in wooded wetland areas of the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park in the spring of 2002. Green heron and great blue heron have frequently been observed in the ponds at the City of Portage Stormwater Quality and Trailways Facility, just north of Romence Road Parkway. A great blue heron has been observed in an Arcadia Creek impoundment, just east of Drake Road.

A 1999 natural features inventory was conducted at "The Groves", a technology park of Kalamazoo Valley Community College, by the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Seventy-eight bird species were observed from March to November, 1999. In 1998, prior to a parking lot construction project which converted a wetland into a stormwater runoff holding pond, a pair of green heron was observed. The hooded warbler, a Species of Special Concern was observed in four of the sampled lots on the property.

A 1995 natural features inventory was conducted in the Portage Creek Basin for the City of Portage by the University of Michigan-Flint. One hundred nine bird species were observed during the study period. Two hundred seventy-three bird species are known to typically breed in, migrate through, or winter in Michigan. No Endangered or Threatened species of birds were observed in the study area. Two special concern species, Cooper's Hawk and Northern Goshawk, were observed.
