Axtell Creek No-Mow Zone

The City of Kalamazoo installed a "no-mow" zone along City property in Stretch 3 of Axtell Creek. This includes the area south of the creek from Howard Street to Paris Cleaners and the Axtell Creek Park on the north bank of the creek near Westnedge Avenue. Leaving riparian vegetation intact allows tall grasses with deep roots to become established. The deep root systems help to stabalize the creek banks. In contrast, mowed grasses have very shallow root systems. Tall vegetation also shades the water and provides wildlife habitat. Axtell Creek is becoming a unique urban natural treasure. Find out what the WildOnes are doing in this stretch to help the creek and what's happing upstream of this stretch.

The no-mow zone provides habitat for wildlife like birds, frogs, butterflies and dragonflies.
