storm water runoff's effect on the creek)

| The ISCO Auto-Sampler is stationed at the Arcadia
Creek outfall to the Kalamazoo River (off of Harrison Street,
just downstream of M43). A weir was installed at the outfall
in order to measure levels and calculate flows. A level probe
is attached to that weir and records levels on 10-minute intervals.
Those level readings are stored in the Auto-Sampler until they
are downloaded by field personnel and entered into a database.
A rain gauge is also connected to the Auto-Sampler. It records
the date and time of bucket tips (when 1/100 of an inch of precipitation
fills the bucket), which can be used to quantify the intensity
of a rain event. The Auto-Sampler stores twenty four 1-liter
bottles, which are used to collect creek samples according to
a programmed schedule. Dry weather samples are collected at
certain times of the day, in order to gauge the daily fluctuations
in pollutant levels and to assess the presence of illicit connections
in the watershed. Wet weather sample collection is enabled by
a rise in creek level or by a certain rain intensity. Samples
are collected frequently during a wet weather event, as the
Arcadia Creek Watershed, being highly impervious, reacts quickly
to rain fall runoff. |
